Conesus Lake Boating

Livingston County is home to Conesus Lake, a true gem to the area. Boating is one of Conesus Lake's favorite activities, and there are several boat launches around the lake. Vitale Park, Pebble Beach and Conesus Lake inlet offer hand boat launches while the Conesus Lake Public Boat Launch offers both a hand and trailer boat launch, as well as picnic facilities, fishing, and room for the kids to run around.

Boating on Conesus Lake consists of breeze riding sailboats, speed boats pulling skiers and tubes with smiling and happily screaming kids, kayaks lazily making there way around the docks, some while fishing and pontoon boats full of friends and family exploring all that the lake has to offer. All making memories to last a lifetime.

Spring has sprung in the region and docks will soon be going in the water.  Boats are coming out of storage at the local marinas and last minute work on them has begun. Along with all this comes responsibility.

A law was passed in 2004 that stated, anyone operating a personal watercraft, must have a boaters safety course certificate. You also must have this in your possession while boating. The fine is $100 if you do not. Livingston County will offer two such courses in 2018, May 19th and June 16th at the Livonia Fire Hall. For more information please visit the Livingston County website. Courses may also be taken online.

A few rules to note while boating this year on Conesus Lake:

  • 10 to 18 years of age: May only operate a motorboat with a person age 18 or older on board, or while holding a safety certificate
  • 18 years of age or older: May operate a motorboat alone, except for Personal Water Craft (PWCs), which require a boating safety certificate for all operators

Speed Limits for All Watercraft

  • 45mph daytime speed limit
  • 25mph nighttime speed limit
  • 5mph/”no wake” speed limit between speed buoys and shoreline

Other Rules

  • Obey all wake zones inside the buoys
  • Do not operate personal watercraft closer than 500' of swim areas
  • Children under 12 should be wearing life vests
  • Avoid divers, swimmers and snorkelers, by boating in the center of the lake

So whether you are boating, kayaking, skiing or just pulled up at Vital Park to watch a summer concert, following some basic boating laws can make lake time enjoyable for everyone.  I for one am looking forward to a great summer with picnics on our boat, music at the park and evening cruises with friends and family.

Have a safe and happy boating season!
